Caffeinated Illustrators Unite!

A couple of weeks ago we had another illustrator meet-up and the discussion was all over the place. We talked about the illustration industry, prices going down while all rights/work for hire is becoming more prevalent.

We discussed how we each check our art: Mirror, hold upside down, bounce it off a friend… to see if there’s something wrong in the drawing.

We all agreed: Your art must keep changing so you don’t get bored or lose your passion.

Most importantly, we all enjoyed discussing Scott’s Pear Butt.

In attendance were Gary LaCosteLauren Scheuer, Lisa GravesEd Shems and Scott Bakal. Here’s what we’ve each been up to recently:

Gary LaCoste: Illustrating a rodeo poster, Duck Boat activity book, illustrating a magic book

Lauren Scheuer: Driving with Dorrie (one of her chickens) to school visits!

Lisa Graves: School visits- getting kids to contribute to a story, designing lab space, proofing her new book: Trail Blazers, starting on book 3, signed with an agent in the U.K.

Ed Shems: School visit- teaching the kids to create characters based on descriptive words, finishing assets for a client’s animated short, lots of illustrations for a foreign language textbook

Scott Bakal: Editorial work and aliens
